Echinacea is a genus of nine species of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, all native to North America. Popularly known as the purple coneflower, it has been traditionally applied as a herbal remedy by the North American Plains Indians, who used its roots to make a poultice for a number of wounds resulting from insects and snakes and also for treating sore gums and colds. Echinacea is thought to serve as a stimulant to the body's immune system by activating white blood cells, whereby making it more difficult for foreign bodies to infect cells. Echinacea is one of the most popular herbal remedies for respiratory infections.
